It's A Monkey!

I got to make another cake this week, yay!  My friend from high school has a little boy and he's turning one this weekend; it's so cool that I got to make his first birthday cake!  Plus, I haven't seen her in about 10 years so it'll be awesome to visit her tomorrow.  This one was done with a shaped cake pan so I decided to make it a little more challenging in the decorating department and made him furry.  :)  I think he looks like a stuffed animal!

Marshmallow Fondant

I'm mostly posting this for my own reference so I can find it faster next time I need it, but for you bakers out there this is a great recipe for cheaper, efficient, and better tasting fondant!  I usually use two batches of this combined to cover a layered cake.  This recipe is taken from this blog.

Marshmallow Fondant

1 cup mini marshmallows

1 tbsp water

1 1/2- 1 3/4 cup powdered sugar

Place marshmallows in a standard 1 cup measuring cup and push down and pack them in. Place in a microwave safe bowl and add the water. Put in the microwave for about 45 seconds, just long enough for them to soften and puff up. Take out and stir with a spoon until it is combined well. At this point it looks kind of soupy. Then add the sugar and mix and fold until all is incorporated and it is no longer sticky. Take it out of the bowl when it gets to the point where most of the sugar is incorporated and knead it in your hands. This takes roughly about 3-5 minutes. Take a fondant roller or a regular rolling pin and roll out just as you would regular fondant. You can get this fondant almost paper thin and it also repairs easily too.

Adding color: If you want to make the whole batch of Marshmallow fondant one color then add the color (gel or paste) at the "soupy" stage. Stir it up and then add the powdered sugar. Otherwise add it after it has come together and been kneaded by hand. I use plastic gloves when I do this, because otherwise your hands are never the same! Add the coloring to a ball of fondant and knead until incorporated. You can use a very small amount of shortening on your hands (gloves), rolling pin, work surface, etc. to keep fondant from sticking.  (I usually just use a sprinkling of powdered sugar on everything to keep it from sticking)

Where The Wild Things Are

The wild things are actually at my brother's house!  Well, one is in his fridge right now anyway.  I had the privilege of making my adorable nephew Finn's 3rd birthday cake today; it was fun!  Thank you to Cherie for the use of her kitchen and for making the frosting and fondant for me.  :)

I love how old Emily is because...

...she's young enough to not know how unfair it is for Alex or myself to come home with Cold Stone for ourselves right before her bed time, and nothing for her.

Muahahahaha!  (Evil mom laugh)

A Bit of This and That

There's not much to blog about this week, seeing as how it's been filled mostly with a puppy's bathroom schedule and a visit to the vet, etc.

Emily is starting to let her swim teacher push her a little bit more, but still is having trouble relaxing at all in the pool.  She let her push her all the way to the bottom of the pool to pick up some rings though; that was awesome!

This week my sister-in-law, Lori, asked me to make a cake for her to give to her daughter's (Anastasia) boyfriend.  I was more than happy to do it!  It was of the smiley face from the move "Watchmen".  You know, that crazy one with the blood on it's face.  Strange cake, but fun to make!  Emily thought it was, "Beautiful, Mommy!!"  Hehe. :)

Yesterday I went to a friend's baby shower (Amber).  I had a lot of fun sitting and talking and seeing all the baby stuff, and she's such a stinkin' cute pregnant person with her tiny round belly!  I'm so glad I got to go.  After the shower Alex, Emily and I went to Nick & Suzanne's for dinner and some family time.  We had some yummy salmon and it was good to see everybody and see how Nick's knee is healing.

Today is mostly a lazy day; yes!!  Here's a picture of the latest cake fiasco to keep you happy until the next time...no pun intended!  ;)

One More For The Scrapbook

Today was Amanda's little boy's 2nd birthday party (Jack) and I was able to make him an Elmo cake to go along with the theme.  I hadn't ever tried one of those shaped cake pans before, so it didn't turn out bad for my first time.

Mmmm!

I'm finally getting a little better every day for the last few days, and Friday was my first day of not sitting on the couch all day.  I was in charge of making the main dish for Alexis' 5th birthday, so it was a lasagna night.  Yum!!!  Look at that mass of cheesy, saucy goodness!

Last week was Emily's last week in preschool so I'm sure this week we'll have lots of pictures to share.

Let Them Eat Cake!

Making cakes is a little hobby of mine (for now, until some day I get to learn how to do it professionally) and I had the privilege of making a few of them this month.  I practice on my friends and family because that's what they're there for! :)

Emily decided that my best friend (Amanda) needed a princess cake for her 29th birthday.  Who was I to tell her she didn't?!  You can never be too old for a princess cake, and I figured if I was going to make one I'd better make it really pink and girly.  It was the most fun cake I've ever made!

Today I was able to make my nephew Devin a cake for his 8th birthday.  He's having a Super Mario Brothers themed party and had been begging Tina for a cake that looks like the mushroom from the game, so she put in her request with me and I said I'd see what I could do.  It turned out pretty cute!

 I heart cake!!
